Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak,
and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
May my teaching drop as the rain,
my speech distill as the dew,
like gentle rain upon the tender grass,
and like showers upon the herb.
For I will proclaim the name of the Lord; ascribe greatness to our God!
-Deuteronomy 32:1-3
The above verses are part of a song Moses sang toward the end of his life. He was leaving instructions for his successor, Joshua, and for all of Israel and their descendants and suddenly burst into song (by the leading of the Holy Spirit).
Look closely at Moses' words. "Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak."
In today's language, he might have said, "Hey! Are You listening up there in heaven?"
I don't know about you, but I'm not in the habit of addressing the LORD like Moses does here. But, I'm no Moses.
He asks, "May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb."
Think about the purpose of rain and dew for a moment. Rain and dew both refresh the earth and all the vegetations. Without rain there is drought and famine.
Moses' desire was that his final message to his people would be heard and absorbed and would refresh their souls.
No matter what our callings and giftings are, you and I teach every day and don't always realize it. I'm not a pastor and most of you reading aren't either.
As Christians, we are often given opportunities to share truth at home with our families, in the workplace, with our neighbors and other places we go. This blog has given me another platform to share God's love and His truth.
Whether I'm talking with my children or other relatives; with my co-workers or my boss; with my neighbor or the cashier in the gas station; on this blog or anywhere on the internet; wherever and whenever God gives me opportunity to speak, I pray that my teaching will will be refreshing like a gentle rain and encouraging like the dew.
I'm not a great writer or a great speaker. But God can use any vessel surrendered to Him. that includes me. That includes you.
May our teaching fall like gentle rain and be absorbed by those who hear.
Father, thank You for teaching us Your truth through Your Word. Thank You for the Holy Spirit who gives us understanding of You and Your ways. I pray that, as You bring opportunity for us to speak, Your hand would be upon our hearts and our lips so that our words will proclaim Your great Name and fall like the gentle rain on thirsty souls who need refreshing from You. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen.
