Yesterday evening, driving westward, I went around a curve in the road and was blessed with the most amazing sunset I have ever seen. Taking a photo while driving on the interstate is probably illegal, not to mention dangerous, but I so wished I could have captured the scene. The picture below doesn't even come close.
The colors displayed in a sunset are not easy to describe but I will attempt to paint a word picture of what I saw. There were bands of gold, melon and pewter splashed across the horizon, overlaid by translucent clouds on a canvas of powder blue, fading outward to lavender and purple. Psalm 19:1 came to mind as I took in the scene.
The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Expounding on this verse, Charles Spurgeon wrote,
"It is not merely glory that the heavens declare, but the "glory of God," for they deliver to us such unanswerable arguments for a conscious, intelligent, planning, controlling, and presiding Creator, that no unprejudiced person can remain unconvinced by them. The testimony given by the heavens is no mere hint, but a plain, unmistakable declaration; and it is a declaration of the most constant and abiding kind." (The Treasury of David, Charles H. Spurgeon)The heavens declare the glory of God. They reveal that He exists and proclaim His creativity and His power and majesty and wisdom. They are a continual testimony of who He is, just as we are supposed to be.
In another Psalm we are told, "Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!" -Psalm 96:3
The heavens never cease in glorifying God and proclaiming who He is. When was the last time we proclaimed His glory and declared who He is?
Declare the glory of God.
Father, Thank You for showing us who You are through Your awesome works of creation. The heavens You created show forth Your glory every moment of every day. I pray that our testimony, both in word and deed would do the same, for You alone are worthy of all glory, honor and praise. Thank You for revealing Yourself and Your glory to our hearts. Help us to continually proclaim and praise You every moment of every day. In Jesus' wonderful Name, Amen.
