Yesterday, I was blessed with a day off work and an opportunity to visit with my oldest son, who lives about an hour away. As I was getting ready to leave, I noticed a very light, steady rain falling. More than just a drizzle, it was gentle, light, steady shower that was a constant presence most of the morning; a gentle September rain.
It reminded me of a verse we discussed here a few weeks ago, but my thoughts leaned in a slightly different direction.
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass - Deuteronomy 32:2
Watching the rain falling on my windshield and on the road got me to thinking about the way God imparts His truth to us. When He brings us to salvation by faith in Christ, God doesn't sent us a hurricane force wind carrying His truth. No, not only does He gently lead us (Isaiah 40:11), God's teaching is gentle too. Granted, sometimes He may allow us to suffer the consequences of our lack of attention to His teaching, but when He imparts truth, it is "here a little, and there a little" (Isaiah 28:10), just like a gentle rain.
God sees us like tender, young plants Deuteronomy tells us. Think about that for a moment. Remember the parable of the sower in Matthew 13? Some of the seed was snatched away, some fell on the rocky places and had no soil, some feel on shallow ground and did not take root. But, some of the seed fell on good soil, where it was able to take root and bring forth fruit.
I'm so thankful for the promise of Philippians 1:6, which says, "...he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ". God will keep teaching me (and you), and causing me (us) to grow until the day of Jesus Christ.
The seed of truth, beginning with the gospel, has been planted into the life of every believer. God continues to water that seed, to cause us to bear fruit. His teaching comes "precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little" (Isaiah 28:10), just like a gentle September rain.
Father, thank You for gently teaching us, a little at a time, like a gentle rain so we can absorb your truth and grow in grace. Thank You for Your patience with us and thank You for the promise you have given us that You will keep teaching us until Jesus comes. Be glorified in our lives as Your teaching is heard and obeyed and proclaimed. In Jesus' precious Name, Amen.
Daily Selah is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
