Daily Selah ~ Friends

Daily Selah is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.

Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. -John 15:15

I have a very good friend who is more of a blessing and encouragement to me than I could describe in words. We have such a close friendship that we have a joke that one of us was born into the wrong family and we should have been born as sisters. But, since we have both been born into God's family, we ARE sisters.

As great a friend as she is, I have an even better Friend. Take another look at the verse above. Jesus calls us His friends.

It is nice to have the kind of friend that you can tell them everything and trust them with what you have shared. Jesus shares with us what He knows from the Father. And, He wants to hear what is on our hearts, too.

Human friends are not perfect, and sometimes we disappoint one another, but Jesus is always, always, always, a faithful Friend. We can lean on Him, love Him and follow Him without ever worrying whether or not He will be there. He has promised to never leave.

Think about that for a moment. Jesus is God, the Creator of the universe, yet He wants to be my friend. He wants to be your friend. How amazing and blessedly awesome is that!? And, oh, what a friend He is!

What a Friend We Have in Jesus
  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer!

    Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

    Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

    Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
    Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.

    Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer—
    Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.
  1. -Joseph M. Scriven 1855

Thank You, Jesus, for loving us and making it possible for us to be called Your friends. You are a wonderful Savior and Friend to us. Help us to be more faithful friends to You and help us to become more like You, for Your honor and glory, I pray. You are worthy of all honor, and glory and praise. We praise You and thank You for Your goodness to us, Dear Friend. In Your Name, Amen.
