The Story of Gray Hair

One day, a little girl was watching her mother washing the dishes. She suddenly noticed several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her mother's brunette head.

She looked at her mother and inquired, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mama?"

Her mother replied, "Well, every time you do something wrong and make me sad, one of my hairs turns white."

The little girl thought for a while, then asked, "Mama, why are all of grandma's hairs are white?"

We can joke about our white hair, try to cover it up or claim we earned every one of them.

But what if each white hair tells a story?

As I creep closer and closer to 50, I've noticed more than a few in contrast to my own brunette head.

We don't notice each white hair as it appears, but what if we did?

What would those hairs testify to? Maybe something like this...

That little cluster in the back? They appeared the day my oldest graduated from college.
Oh yeah, those 2 right there in the front, they popped out after the second round of radiation.
Those couple on the side? Well, I have wonderful 3 sons; 2 in high school, and 1 who graduated from college last year. Enough said :)
The ones right on top? Hmm... I think those might have come along right after a long and blessed night of prayer.

In a previous post, we discussed What Scars Are For and noted that each scar is a reminder and a testimony of God's faithfulness and healing.

What if gray hairs are also a reminder of how God has walked us through the trials and joys of life?

Gray hair means I have a lot of time to look back upon; a lot of years to remember and remind myself of God and His goodness to me each step of the way.

That kind of looking back and remembering what God has done can be greatly encouraging and faith-building. He has walked with me before, healed me before, provided for me before, met my needs before and I know He will do it again.

Reviewing God's faithfulness not only blesses us, it also blesses His holy Name. When we remember His goodness and faithfulness and continue to walk with Him by faith, our lives become a breathing testimony to Who He is and what He has done.

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed,
because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
It is good that a man should both hope
and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
(Lamentations 3:21-26)

If you don't have any white hair yet, someday you will.

What stories would your white hairs tell?

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope...
