That's Our Job

{Daily Selah}

Let me tell you the story of the My Way Bakery...

The My Way Bakery is owned and operated by 3 master bread makers. One went to the New Way School of Baking, one attended the Traditional School of Bread Making and the other went to the City College of Baking Excellence. Each of the bread makers is convinced his way is the only right way and that the others are just doing it all wrong.

The My Way Bakery has several employees but none of the employees ever know what to do because when they ask the master bread makers, they are given three very different kinds of instructions. "Here, wash the bread pans." "No, come and knead this dough." "No, the window display is all wrong. Go make it look better."

Can you imagine the chaos and confusion if such a bakery existed? It certainly wouldn't be very successful, would it?

When Jesus ascended into heaven, He "gave gifts unto men" (Ephesians 4:8).  Every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ has been given unique gifts for the purpose of "the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12).

Whether another believer thinks like we do, worships like we do, or prays like we do is really irrelevant. God has put us together - fitly framed us together as His dwelling place. That's not ecumenism. Ecumenism embraces all religions. Born again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ come in all shapes and sizes, yet God has fit us together for His purposes and has given each of us a purpose to fulfill.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit (Ephesians 2:19-22).

We all come from different backgrounds, have different perspectives and different abilities, yet we are all needed and necessary parts of the whole. Each of us has been given specific gifts for encouraging our fellow believers, for fulfilling the role God has designed for us and to help one another grow.

That's our job.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son to die in our place so we could be forgiven and know You. Thank you for putting us together as your dwelling place on this earth. Help us to be what You have called us to be and to use the gifts You have given us to build up the body of Christ and to do Your will. In Jesus' Name, amen.

{Daily Selah} is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
