Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. - Isaiah 7:14
Immanuel. God with us. Jesus.
He saw our deepest need. He saw us here dying in sin and "not willing that any should perish" (2 Peter 3:9), He made a way. God knew we couldn't reach His standards on our own. So, He chose to step into our existence and make a way for us. What an awesome, loving, gracious and merciful God we serve!
Jesus stepped down from His throne, leaving His crown behind and clothed Himself in flesh. Leaving heaven's glory for a dirty stable, He walked the same roads as all those He would meet. He was homeless, sometimes hungry, tested and tempted, yet never sinned. Still, that was not enough. As the perfect, sinless and spotless Lamb of God, He willingly gave His life as a sacrifice for you and me.
He came to be our Immanuel, our God with us. But, He didn't cease to be our Immanuel when He shed His blood and died. He didn't cease to be our Immanuel when He ascended into heaven. He came so that He could be our Immanuel forever!
Jesus is in heaven, but He is also here, still our God with us. Galatians 2:20 reveals that every believer in Christ can be assured that "Christ liveth in me." He is still our Immanuel, still our God with us.
Our God with us has given us a precious promise; "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5).
Jesus is the eternal God, the Alpha and Omega. He has no beginning and no end. He is also eternally our Immanuel. He made His dwelling place with us and in us. He has promised never to leave.
The song in the video below (sung by school choirs in Chester Cathedral, U.K.) beautifully relates the awesome love, grace and mercy of our awesome Creator God who chose to become and always be our God who is with us.
Let's praise our eternal Immanuel.
{Daily Selah} is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
