There is Power in the Name of Jesus

We often sing and speak of the power of Jesus' Name, but do we really believe it?

Do we really believe there is power in His Name?

Are we living like there is power in His Name?

Let's take a look at 4 aspects of the power of the Name of Jesus.

1.) The Name of Jesus is the only Name by which we can be saved.

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole...

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:10,12)

There is salvation in no other name but the Name of Jesus. His very Name means salvation!

2.) The Name of Jesus is above every other name.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

We tend to think of that passage as referring to people. One day every person who has ever lived will bow before Him. Somehow, we seem to overlook the fact that all of creation bows at His Name - "things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth."

Paul prayed for the church at Ephesus the same thing God desires for each of us:

"That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to comeAnd hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all." (Ephesians 1:17-23)

If you just skimmed over the passage above as we all sometimes tend to do, I encourage you to go back and read it and, this time, take note of Jesus' position, power and authority.

All things are under His feet. Not just some things, ALL things. Whatever circumstance you find yourself in right now in this moment, remember it is ALL under His feet.

3.) The Name of Jesus is the ONLY name in which we are told to pray.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full." (John 16:23-24)

4.) The Name of Jesus is the ONLY Name feared by the powers of darkness.

"And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?" (Matthew 8:28-29) (See also: James 2:19)

There is much more to discover in the Word of God about the power in the Name of Jesus. Many years before He came, Isaiah prophesied of Jesus, saying, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

His Name is wonderfully and powerfully the Name above all names. His Name is JESUS.

The story is told of an ailing old Episcopalian minister who had been ill for a long time. He was unable to care for himself any longer but needed a nurse to care for his needs day and night. The minister had heard of people who prayed for healing so he called together some men whom he thought could pray this way for him. The men prayed for the minister, but nothing happened. The men left and as they were talking about what had happened, one suggested they go back into the minister's home and try something else. As they gathered around the bed, they began to whisper, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," getting steadily louder as they repeated His Name. While they were praising His Name, that old minister got up out of bed and got himself dressed. As the focus shifted from the situation before them to the power of the Name of Jesus, God began to work.

I wonder if we also sometimes miss the provision and intervention of God in our lives because we are so focused on the issue that we forget there is power in the Name of Jesus.

Remember, everything in heaven, in earth and under the earth bows at His Name.

THERE IS POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS!
