Done any fishing lately? Fishing is one of those activities that takes a great deal of patience and concentration. If you set your rod down for a moment and turn away, you're likely to lose it as some fish claims his prize of your bait and your pole you weren't paying attention to. How do I know? Personal experience.
2 men were out fishing one day when, suddenly, stranger approached them. They had never seen Him before and as yet, knew nothing about Him. He walked right up to them and said, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19)
It's interesting that neither one said, "Uh... who are you?" or, "What do you mean we're gonna fish for men?"
I don't know too many Hebrew idioms, but you wouldn't think that was a common thing to say. So why did Andrew and Peter immediately leave their nets and go with Jesus?
Right after Jesus called the fishermen to follow Him, they went to the synagogue in Capernaum, where the people were amazed that Jesus taught with authority, unlike the scribes (Mark 1:22).
Peter and Andrew recognized Jesus' authority too, "they straightway left their nets, and followed him."(Matthew 4:20)
Jesus is calling every believer to the same task. He says, "Go ye..." and tells us He has made us ambassadors (Mark 16:15, 2 Corinthians 5:20)
We know who He is and His authority should have more impact on us than it did on 2 fishermen meeting a stranger. Let's concentrate on the job we've been given to do.
Done any fishing lately?
Father, thank You for sending Your Son to die in our place. Thank You that He has called us to follow Him. Help us to be better witnesses for Him; to be fishers of men and ambassadors for Christ so that others may follow Him. In His precious Name, Amen.
[Daily Selah] is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
