Honor...

{Daily Selah}

 The Tomb of the Unknowns, in the center of Arlington National Cemetery, bears this inscription:

HERE RESTS IN
HONORED GLORY
AN AMERICAN
SOLDIER
KNOWN BUT TO GOD

Honor. Its a word that has dropped out of use in our modern society. We might say, "Oh, she's a nice person," or, "He's a good guy," but we seldom speak of honor any more.

The Oxford Dictionary of American English relates many applications of the word honorIt can mean high respect or esteem, living by a code of conduct, a privilege, or it may be used as a title of respect.

In God's Word we find the words honor,honored or honorable appearing 178 times (spelled with a "u" in the English of the KJV).

Honor may no longer be an important concept to most of our culture but it is certainly important to our God.

Ahimelech spoke very highly of David to King Saul, saying, "And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?" (1 Samuel 22:14).

David faithfully served his king and his country and was esteemed as an honorable man. My British grandfather served in the Royal Artillery during World War II. Two of my cousins were in the Royal Air Force for many years, including during Desert Storm. Here in the United States, I know many people who served in the military.

Those who have been on the front lines in defense of freedom are certainly worthy of honor. The next time you see someone in uniform, honor them by thanking them for their service. Without people like them, you and I wouldn't know the freedoms we have today.

In this country and many other nations of the world, God is no longer honored as He once was. As we take time to honor those who have sacrificed for freedom today, let's also take time to honor the One who sacrificed His Son for us and live honorably before Him.

"Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty" (Psalm 104:1).

Father, thank You for allowing me to live in a country where I am free to worship You. Thank You for all those who have gone before and paid the price for my freedom. Bless and protect all those serving in our military today. Keep them safe and watch over their families, I pray. Help us to remember those who should be honored and to honor You above all in the way we live, for You are worthy of all glory, honor and praise. In Jesus' Name, amen.

{Daily Selah} is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
