See the adorable guy in the picture? That's our dog, Taz, who is a year and a half old. Off camera, holding the leash, is another adorable guy... my youngest son, who is 17.
Taz is very energetic and sometimes just a little rebellious, but often very cute and loving. Teenage sons can often be the same, I've noticed.
A few days ago, I asked my son to take Taz for a walk and he didn't want to. His reasoning was, "Mom, I just caught him chewing my shoes again. He doesn't deserve to go for a walk."
(This dog does seem to have a thing about teenagers' stinky running shoes.)
I said, "You know, its not about whether he deserves a walk or not. He needs to go for a walk."
Strange as it may sound, that little talk about the needs of a dog led to a very good discussion with my son that I pray he will remember for a long time.
God, in His grace and mercy, looked down and saw our need. We didn't and don't deserve His forgiveness or salvation. Yet, it was love that prompted Him to send His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, for our redemption.
God didn't stop there, though. Jesus came to earth, and became a man to give His life as the atoning sacrifice for our sin and along the way, He accomplished something else for us too.
In His time here on earth, Jesus suffered everything you and I will ever face. Why? So He could say, "I've been there. I know what you're going through. I love you and I will take care of you."
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16).
Jesus doesn't just see our needs; He feels what we feel, AND He's here to help. It's not about whether or not we deserve His grace or His help. None of us do. But, because He loves us, He's here for us. Always.
Love sees the need and acts.
Thank You, Father, for the grace and mercy You so freely bestow upon us when we come before You. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for us, to shed His blood for our redemption and to become our great High Priest. Thank You for giving us the privilege of coming before Your throne of grace to receive mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. In Jesus' wonderful Name, Amen.
{Daily Selah} is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
