Some people reach for success. Others for wealth. Still others reach for fame.
What are you reaching for?
The apostle Paul freely admitted that he wasn't quite there yet but was reaching forth and pressing on for his greatest desire.
He wasn't striving for money or to have his name up in lights. He was working toward a much higher goal.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14).
What was this prize Paul wanted so desperately?
To answer that, let's take a look at 3 very important things Paul realized about his life here on this earth:
1). He knew he was not his own.
Paul knew he has been bought with a price - the precious blood of Christ. His life was not his own; he belonged to Jesus.
2). This world was not his home.
Paul knew that one day he would meet Jesus face to face, that his citizenship was in heaven and the presence of the Lord would be his home for all eternity.
3.) His duty and delight was to glorify Christ.
Paul didn't see living the crucified life as a mere duty of burden. He rejoiced at every opportunity to deny himself so he could exalt his Saviour Jesus Christ, the One who is worthy of all glory, honor and praise.
He forgot the things which were behind, so as not to be content with past labours or present measures of grace. He reached forth, stretched himself forward towards his point; expressions showing great concern to become more and more like unto Christ. He who runs a race, must never stop short of the end, but press forward as fast as he can; so those who have heaven in their view, must still press forward to it, in holy desires and hopes, and constant endeavours. -Matthew Henry
Paul was reaching for the prize, the prize of becoming more and more like the Lord Jesus Christ who had given everything for him.
