Be Still...

[Daily Selah]

It has been an eventful week and I'm very thankful to be able to enjoy the weekend. I was in a bit of a hurry when I left work yesterday afternoon, thinking all the errands I needed to take care of.

Wouldn't you know, a train stopped me in my tracks (pun intended). So, I'm sitting there staring at the line of cars ahead, waiting like everyone else for the Amtrak to finish unloading passengers and get on its way again.

As I mulled over where I needed to be, what needed to be done and looked at the clock on the car stereo, I began to feel just a little impatient.

You'll never guess what happened next.

Have you ever felt like you were stuck between a rock and a hard place? Well, I was stuck between a train and a horse. No kidding!

I happened to check my rear-view mirror and there he was - a rather lanky and old looking thing, pulling an Amish buggy (not that unusual around here). Since I had nothing better to do, I watched the horse for a few moments.

The horse didn't enjoy the wait so much either. He was throwing his head up and down and side to side, stepping to the left and then back to the right, and flaring his nostrils. You might call it the Neigh! I Don't Wanna Wait Dance. Yes, I do have an odd sense of humor, but I enjoy it ;)

As I was watching the horse make a spectacle of himself, a verse came to mind:

Be still, and know that I am God... -Psalm 46:10

The person in the lane next to me would have thought I was a little cuckoo if they had glanced in my direction. Watching that silly horse while thinking about that verse made me literally laugh out loud.

Before you think, "Uh oh, Ann-Louise has really lost it now," think about this with me for a moment. When we rush around, all impatient, trying to do what we think needs to be done, the way we think it needs to be done, we probably look a lot like that horse in God's eyes.

There we go, chomping at the bit, wagging our heads, impatiently trying to go our own way.

But God says,

Be still, and know that I am God... -Psalm 46:10

Be still, He says. And, know. Knowing that He is God and exalting Him as God in our lives means accepting the things He allows in our lives (including the delays) with patience and understanding that His will and His timing are so much better than ours.

Finally, the train pulled away and the crossing bar went up and we were all free to move ahead once more.

And, as I drove on, I had to smile at my God who had a humorous and perfect plan to remind me to be still and know that He is God.

Be still...

Father, I just want to thank You for being in control of my life. I'm so thankful that You know the end from the beginning, You know the way that I take and You know what's best for me. Help me to be still before You and remember that You are God in every moment, every situation and every day. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

[Daily Selahis a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
