Every parent wants their children to be successful, but God doesn't measure success like the world does. When my teenage boys told me a few days ago they were both going to sign up for Bible quizzing this year, it made me smile. Many people don't realize the value of memorizing and meditating on God's Word, but it is crucial to an obedient life in Christ. And in God's eyes, obedience is the measure of success, not money or fame.
Psalm 1 describes a man who made a choice. There were plenty of temporal distractions around he could have chosen to follow but this man made a better choice, a choice which, in God's view, resulted in ultimate success. Instead of following the thinking of the world or his own desires, he delighted in something far better, something of eternal value.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. -Psalm 1:2
Delighting in God's Word, learning God's ways and obeying His commands results in s successful life. I'm not talking about money, houses or cars, but in a life lived in a way that is pleasing to God. Take a look at the result:
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. -Psalm 1:3
What caused this blessed life for the Psalm 1 man? It was his delight in God's Word that led to blessing.
Fruitful. Sustained. Prosperous. Like a tree.
Father, give us a love for Your Word like the man in Psalm 1. Help us to delight in Your ways and in Your precept. Make us fruitful, sustained and prosperous in all we do, for Your glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Daily Selah is a mini-devotional, a pause to ponder about the Lord and how He wants us to live.
